Thousands of students from across 17 universities in the UK, Cyprus, Lithuania, Greece and Sweden have been busy saving energy in their dormitories through taking part in the Student Switch Off campaign. Now there is only a month left until we announce Europe's best energy saving dormitory for 2015-16!
Like last academic year, there will be a winner at each of our universities; out of these, there will be one national winner announced for the UK, Cyprus, Sweden, Lithuania and Greece. There can however be only one overall winner from the hundreds of dormitories taking part! Last year it was Teme from the University of Worcester, this accolade is still up for grabs for 2015-16 - check out how the league is going.
We’ve done some calculations to find out what impact we’ve had since the Student Switch Off campaign started in September 2014. In 2014-15, as a direct result of the project, we saved over 1.5 million kWh of electricity in our dormitories, which resulted in a saving of 620 tonnes of carbon and 200,000 Euros. Since launching the campaign for the 2015-16 academic year in September 2015, by December 2015 we already achieved a saving of almost 650,000 kWh which equates to 285 tonnes of carbon and over 85,000 Euros – and we are only going to save more!
Well done to all our students for their efforts in helping drive these massive savings so far. We are excited to find out who the winners of the 2015/16 campaign will be so keep up those energy-saving actions everyone!
