Engaging students
Halls visits are now in full swing, with dormitory coordinators carrying out final visits to talk to students about the Student Switch Off campaign - winnings halls will start being announced around April time! Who will be the winner at each of the participating universities?
Below is an account by Elisavet, dormitory coordinator at the Technical University of Crete, Greece, on her latest halls visit.
'The second halls visit at TUC took place on 23rd February 2017. This visit was really pleasant and left us with a positive impression as it did on our first halls visit. The main aim of the visit was to inform students about the Student Switch Off campaign. Posters were posted in common areas to inform students that were not in the halls during the visit about the campaign and to keep all halls residents constantly alert about energy saving.
During our visit we also took the chance to speak with our latest photo competition winner and give him his prize in person. The prize in our photo competitions this year is a ferry ticket from Chania to Athens. It was the first time that this student participated in a Student Switch Off photo competition so we asked him about where he found out about the campaign and the photo competitions. The student and his flatmates found out it from former prize winners and soon after “Liked” our facebook page to stay informed about the campaign activities'.
In the UK, dormitory coordinators have also been carrying out halls visits to the 6 universities participating in SAVES (University of Bath, University of Warwick, DMU, University of Northampton, Cranfield University, University of Worcester). On her last visit to University of Northampton in February, Joanna talked to numerous students about the campaign (100% sign up :)) and showed them how well their hall is doing on the leaderboard (dashboard), further motivating students to save energy. A different approach was taken in DMU, where a stall was held in one of the participating halls, and students passing by were informed about SSO and asked to pledge to save energy. Similar halls visits have been taking place in University of Cyprus and the participating Lithuanian universities.
