Article by Vasileios Ntouros, Dormitory Coordinator at NKUA
The Student Switch Off (SSO) energy saving campaign at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens closed in a festive atmosphere. Students living in the dormitories were very happy not only because they were back in their rooms after a two-month absence but also because another successful year in terms of energy saving efforts had come to an end!
Many students gathered around the SSO stands to receive the campaign’s gifts: Some preferred the T-shirts while others the cloth bags. Some more cautious ones chose the sweatshirts for the winter so that they do not have to set their thermostat on higher temperatures or the umbrellas for the winter rainy days. The reception desks in each of the four NKUA’s dormitory buildings for two hours became the epicenter of the tenants’ activity, with students inviting their roommates to come and pick up their gifts, speak with the SSO ambassadors and listen to energy saving tips but also to urge them to continue their action and inspire more students.
The SSO team at NKUA, gave away the SSO gifts to students by keeping the required precautions and social distance. For that special day, the student ambassadors were named the “SSO masked men with the gifts” because of the mandatory mask they wore. This gave an extra note of optimism and all together, students and SSO Ambassadors, celebrated the end of the academic year with laughter and joy as they agreed that energy saving efforts would continue regardless of whether they stay in their dormitory or not.
If we could describe the thoughts of the students we met from this event and in general this year then it would be with John’s words, a 3rd year law student who told us: “The two months I was away from dormitories due to the covid-19 outbreak, I had the opportunity to teach my mother how to save energy at home as you taught us here (in the dormitory). Now you have gained an extra follower for your campaign - but she is not a student! She’s a 50-year-old housewife!”
What else could we say to all of you except for a big Thank You!
Stay safe and see you soon!
