The main reasons for saving energy are financial and environmental. Finding ways to reduce your energy consumption will have long lasting effects on your pocket and the planet.

Taking responsibility for your energy usage while you’re living in halls will be good practice for when you have to pay the energy bills yourself. Keeping energy usage low now could also keep halls costs lower for the next generation of students.

It is important to think of the environment too: none of our energy is 100% renewable, therefore whenever you use the lights, you are consuming a tiny part of the earth’s resources which cannot be replaced. As the African proverb suggests, if you think you’re too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent a night with a mosquito. Live lightly on the planet – try to reduce the devastation you leave behind you.

Easy ways to save energy:
Turn off lights when not needed
Switch off devices and chargers when not in use
Put a lid on your saucepan to cook food quicker and use less energy
Cook with friends – cooking one meal for four uses less energy than cooking four meals for one
Consider whether turning the heating down in your room would be more appropriate than opening the window

Try to get into the habit now – after all, you’ll be paying energy bills for the rest of your life!
